Body Mass Index (BMI) is one way to find out your ideal weight range and predict how much risk your health problems are. This method is used to determine a healthy weight based on weight and height.

Body mass index figures or in English Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to indicate a person’s weight category whether it is proportional or not. Through BMI, a person will know whether his weight is in the normal, excess, or even deficient categories.

Body mass index is obtained by dividing a person’s body weight in kilograms by their height in meters squared. For some people, the value of body mass index may not be accurate. Those who are pregnant, bodybuilders, or athletes with high activity levels are those with a BMI value that does not reflect current health. That is, even though their BMI values ​​are above normal, it does not mean they have excessive fat.

Weight Classification Based on BMI

BMI calculations are divided into four categories:

  • A person is obese if his BMI is equal to or above 30.
  • When someone’s BMI touches the numbers 25-29.9, then he is categorized as overweight.
  • Normal BMI or ideal body weight is in the range of 18.5-24.9.
  • If someone has a BMI under 18.5, then that person has a body weight below normal.

As for the Asian population, including Indonesia, the IMT grouping is as follows:

  • A person is obese if his BMI is above 25.
  • When someone’s BMI touches the numbers 23-24.9, he is categorized as overweight.
  • Normal BMI is in the range of 18.5-22.9.
  • If someone has a BMI under 18.5, then that person has a body weight below normal.

Unfortunately, the above numbers are less accurate when applied to people with eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa. Body mass index figures also do not represent those who experience extreme levels of obesity.

Don’t Rely too heavily on Body Mass Index

BMI can indeed be used as a benchmark so that someone is wary of abnormal body weight. However, relying excessively on that number is also unwise. One disadvantage of calculating BMI is that the results of BMI are general because they do not take into account other factors, such as body type, age, and activity level.

  • If there are two individuals who have the same body mass index, but differ in sex and age, then it also needs to be taken into account.
  • Where one’s weight comes from can also be an inaccurate calculation of body mass index, for example athletes or bodybuilders. Both of these groups are likely to have a higher weight because they have an athletic body. Body weight comes from muscle mass, not body fat.
  • Based on age, for example, adults tend to have more body fat than children. As for gender, women naturally have more body fat than men.
  • Likewise, the activity and shape of one’s body. Despite having a normal body mass index, people who are less mobile may have more body fat. Those who have more fat in the stomach, are considered more vulnerable to health problems.
  • Fat that settles on the stomach and waist is associated with the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. While those who have fat deposits in the hips and thighs are considered safer from the threat of these diseases.
  • It is noteworthy but escaped from the calculation of IMT is someone’s ethnicity. Each ethnic group is faced with its own health threats. For Asians, a BMI of 27 or higher is considered obese. In fact, the obesity category in general is in the range of BMI over 30.
  • Certain diseases or medical conditions, such as malnutrition or ascites, can also cause an inaccurate BMI calculation. This is because of the increase in body weight due to the accumulation of body fluids.

Despite all its shortcomings, the calculation of BMI is well known, especially as a reminder to maintain weight. By having a normal weight, the following benefits can be obtained.

  • Minimize a person from the risk of joint pain and muscle aches.
  • Have a better sleep pattern and quality.
  • Heart performance will be lighter.
  • Blood circulation and metabolism will also be better.
  • Reducing the risk of heart disease and certain cancers.
  • Reducing cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, and reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
