Tobacco smoking is a habit that is hard to leave. Various methods are also used to eliminate this habit that can endanger users. Electric smoking is now seen as an alternative first step to stopping smoking.
Until now experts are still debating whether electric cigarettes are able to overcome smoking addiction or just the opposite. There are some who support, but there are also those who disagree.
Pros and Cons of Electric Cigarettes
A new study conducted by researchers from University College London’s Health Behavior Research Center in the UK, suggests that e-cigarettes can help smokers to stop smoking. According to the published study, about 60 percent of people who want to quit smoking are predicted to launch their efforts if they switch to using electric cigarettes instead of the nicotine patch method or nicotine gum.
The study also revealed as much as 20 percent of the 5,850 smokers who participated in the survey managed to stop smoking tobacco using only electric cigarettes.
The way an electric cigarette works is to convert liquid nicotine into steam. The resulting steam is believed to reduce the desire to smoke because it only contains nicotine and does not contain tobacco smoke. Therefore, the use of electric cigarettes is increasingly popular. For example in the United States in 2010, only 2 percent of smokers switched to e-cigarettes. But the number jumped 30 percent in 2012.
Even so, the results of the above research are different from studies previously conducted by the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education University of California. According to this study, the use of electric cigarettes is not able to help smokers overcome smoking addiction.
Dr. Pamela Ling who was involved in the study said that the use of e-cigarettes was not enough to help overcome smoking addiction if the study was conducted on groups of smokers in general. In contrast to research in the UK which only examines people who do have the intention to stop smoking with the help of electric cigarettes.
Electric Cigarettes Are More Effective Than Other Methods
From research in the UK, it was noted that 20 percent of smokers managed to quit smoking using the e-cigarette method. This figure is higher compared to other methods, such as the use of nicotine patches and nicotine gum. With both methods, there are only 10 percent who successfully stop smoking. According to Robert West, University College London’s Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, e-cigarettes can improve public health because it can help the process of quitting smoking. He also believes that e-cigarettes are safer than ordinary tobacco cigarettes. Even so, this matter still needs to be studied more deeply.
The Enjoyment of Electric Cigarettes Same with Tobacco Cigarettes
Since it was discovered in 2003 by a Chinese company, Ruyan, the popularity of e-cigarettes is increasing, especially for tobacco cigarette addicts. They chose electric cigarettes as a new way to smoke because they get the pleasure of smoking tobacco cigarettes. They can still breathe the sensation of nicotine, then exhale smoke in the form of steam. They can’t get it when using nicotine patches or nicotine gum.
They also claim to be healthier after using e-cigarettes such as easier breathing and coughing is slightly reduced. Not only that, they are also happy because they are free from the smell of smoke and stained teeth.
One thing that makes electric cigarettes popular because the price is cheap when compared to ordinary tobacco cigarettes. As an estimate, a pack of tobacco cigarettes is usually valued at Rp. 13,000 for the contents of 16 sticks. One cigarette can be consumed in 20 puffs (16 x 20 = 320 puffs). If every day a smoker consumes one pack of cigarettes, then in a month he must spend Rp. 390,000.
Try to compare with a package of electric cigarettes containing 5 cartridges. One cartridge can last up to 120 suction (5 cartridge x 120 = 600 suction). All can be obtained by spending Rp. 250,000.
Even though it’s cheaper, you have to be careful with e-cigarettes because their safety status, especially for the long term, is still unknown. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also advised electronic cigarette manufacturers not to claim their products as smoking cessation devices until there is strong scientific evidence to support this.
Apart from all that, whether electronic cigarettes can help overcome smoking addiction or not, the best way is to stop smoking in any form. Begin to stop introducing nicotine into the body because nicotine is an addictive substance that is bad for health. With discipline in the effort to stop smoking, we free the body from dependence on chemicals.
